Unit 2 evaulation
Final evaluation
I have chosen diary but it has 2 different types and I have chosen- same old, same old as I know that I would come up with loads of ideas for this type of diary. I have developed a variety of ideas throughout this theme, like experimenting with taking loads of photos and I got these ideas from the artist that I have been researching as they are the one that gave me ideas's of how I could be taking my new photos's. The artist that I have researched was Bill Brandt, Ann Rosener, Esther Bubley, Jimmy Owens and Stephanie Shore. These artists have helped me to develop new ideas throughout my themes, as I was researching them I was inspired by looking at their photo's that they take and one thing I recognised is how they all view the theme diary and I know this because their way of taking photo's that are linked to diary are different. My favourite artist that I was researching is Stephanie Shore because she led me to the ideas for my final images, also by me looking at her photo's I feel like they are actually like a diary that is visual but not written down, because she takes photos of what she does everyday and that Includes what she is doing, what she eats, who she is with etc..., so I thought that it was a good idea, so this is where my photo's started to become really interesting as I started taking photos of what I was doing everyday like she did, and this is what gave me more options for my final image.
I started experimenting with photos by using my phone, I did this everyday but sometimes at the end of the day I didn't have enough as I sometimes forgot to take some photos, but down below are 3 of the images that I have taken throughout the time that I have been doing diary:

I think that these images are really good because they show what I have been doing really cleary, also you can tell what I've been doing in my day. My favourite one out of the three is the middle one because Its one of my favourite places to go to in London, also the brightness of the photo gets the persons attention really well and the colours in the photo are really interesting. My second favourite is the cake because making cakes is one of the biggest things in my life, the photo quality is really good and its a personal account.
As i was taking my photos throughout the time I could see some things were wrong, like the photos on the left. What was wrong with the photos is they look quite rough and the photo that I took at night time is too dark. I do have other photo's that look darker as well, the reason that its not good when its dark is because you can't really see where I am and also the surroundings. The other photo taken in the day time is a little bit better but, like the dark pictures, you can't see the surroundings as well, only that I was in a room.
These images don't show really well what is happening but the 2 images below are much better as they are clearer and you can see exactly where I was and what I was I was doing. The images also looks really clear as the quality shown is better as well. Overall whats good for all 4 photo's is that they link to the theme 'diary' itself, you can see in all the photos that i am in different places. |
My process to getting through
I used different technique's to get through the "diary" theme as I have shown below:
The image shown on the left are the first couple of photo's that I took when I started 'diary'. These photos look really good and interesting but I had two problems: One of them was that I took the photo's using an app and not on a normal camera as my camera roll was full. The other problem was that I used effects all the time and none of my photos were on neutral effect which I realised when I uploaded the photo's. I decided to stop taking photos with effects and aimed to make them look more natural. Another reason I started taking photos without effects is that I noticed the other artists taking natural shots. I took inspiration from this and decided to leave off the filters.
The next coupe of photos down below is what I moved onto as my next couple of photo's for my diary theme. While I was taking these photos I started liking the idea of taking photos of trees everyday as I thought that it may have looked more interesting and the view looked better on the camera. I also like the fact that some days it was a little bit windy which meant that my photo's would look a bit more exciting with the trees moving within the photo. As I started working through all my photos, I finally discovered and researched one last diary photographer before attempting my final piece, her name was Stephanie Shore. Shore was the one that helped me to develop my style and I took inspiration from her work. What Stephaine does is takes photos of everyday things that she does and of the people she is with. So I decided to take this method of diary and blend it in with my photos that I would be taking and it turned out that I was also taking photos everyday of what I did and who I was with. Another reason why I was also a good that I followed Stephanie's example is because as I looked back at my photo's that I took from looking at the examples of Stephanie Shore's, one I had plenty of photo's to choose from to add to my final image. |
My final outcome:
For my final piece of image what I have chosen to do is, I have chosen to take one of my portraits that someone that taken for me and what i did with that photo was upload it to photoshop and edited the brightness, contras especially the focus on the image and lastly I changed the effect from Neutral effect to Black and White effect to make it stand out more, so once I finished all of that my teacher help me print it of in A1 and it came a week later. Once I got received the photo I laid it out on a table where there was enough space for me to start designing and adding things to it. My plan for how I want to make it look creative was to cut different size of circle holes in the paper and add my taken 'diary' photos that I have had and fill the circle holes with them photos, to do this, firstly I used a circle cutter to help me cut out my first set of circles on my portrait, one I did that I used some of the images that I printed out from my 'dairy' images and cut them out with scissors into smaller circles as some of them were printed out in A4 and some in A5 but still was big, thats why I cut them into almost the size of the circle that I cut out neatly. I looked at how my photo looked overall and thought it might look better if I cut out bigger circles so that the brighter photos can go there to make the photo stand out more when it is completely finished, so how I did this was I used a different type of knife to cut out the circles but how I got the circles was I took Sellotape and pencil, and what I did was I use the pencil to draw around the inside of the Sellotape to make a neat circle, I then use the knife to cut out the circle that I drew out on to my portrait. Once I completed that I printed out more of my brighter looking photos and place them behind there and how I manage to make the photo stay behind the circle is I used paper Sellotape to make it stay. I then had empty Circles left and I thought I might use black paper and write on it with white pencil which I found as I wanted to see what It would turn out to look like but it didn't look right so I just thought I might fill the rest of the hole with extra brighter photos that I have that I can print out.
In the end I was happy because I manage to get through all of that work and make my photo look creative as much as it can be.

I am really happy with the progress I have made in Unit 2, I have improved and made new sets of images based on my new diary photos that I have taken and I am very pleased with all my photographs and my final piece of work.
