Unit 1: Final Evaluation
During this course, I have researched a variety of artists who all have their own interesting ways of taking photos and I have been influenced by the work of each one. These artists are: Anna Atkins, Man-ray, Harold Edgerton, Jill Freedman, Hannah Hoch, Francis Bruguiere, Tamara Lorenz, Mina Sacenac, David Shrigley and Michael Hughes. When I was doing different themes like Photogram, I looked at Man-ray's work and was influenced by what he had created. I thought I would go and create some photographs like his. I also found his photos fascinating. I looked at Maurizio Galimberti while I was doing the fragment theme, I really liked how he styled his photos together, and how it all came together in one photo. When I looked at his photos, it seemed like it had taken ages for him to get it done, but then when I thought it, it became really simple although it took a long time for me to create my own. His photos also drew my attention because they were really different from other artists. I like the fact that he didn't have to use professional cameras to take pictures, and that led me to using any camera, whether it's a phone camera or iPad etc, it doesn't really matter. When I started creating my own version of his style, I created a few at school but also, at home, I tried different photos at different angles, and put them together.
The artist that I was the most influenced by was Michael Hughes. I researched him when I was doing the fragment project, I really like the way he flattens his images and blends it in with other objects. I started to think about this a lot and I thought it would be good if I came up with my own ideas.
While I was working through unit one, I explored different themes in techniques and processes like cyanotypes, photograms, light painting and pinhole photography. My favourite one was light painting. I felt as if I was drawing on the air where it was impossible to see it but then later on I could see what it looked like. I tried writing and drawing a stickman and lots of other things. I even went on google images to look at different images of light painting and I tried hard not to copy them and try to think if I could do at least something similar to it. From that, I started to develop different ideas and thought of how good it might look when I presented it. I also got different ideas from looking at different artist like Harold Edgerton.
Throughout the experiment that I did throughout photogram and rayographs I created some photos that I liked, but when I looked back on the photos i thought it needed some changes so I changed it by repeating the same photo but maybe i left the lights on for too long or too quick, I also tried other ways like using different objects for my photos, to see if it would look better by adding more objects if not I try to arrange it with some space in the middle. The way I got this photo done was I use a special chemical paper and place it on a board to rest on, afterwards I would get some objects and place it on the chemical paper, once I have done that I will put on light to shine on the paper for less than 5 second and remove all the object of it, after that I place the chemical paper in the water but there is 3 different types of water, then I left it to dry it afterwards.
I like the idea of this and how it came out, but I repeated the same thing again and again until it becomes just how I like it.
My final image that I created was a picture of a glass filled with water and 3 fish inside of it with one boy looking like he was swimming. I started of by taking different shots of the glass and the boy(in different portraits) then I burrowed the fish from google images. Once I have finish taking the pictures I went on photoshop and uploaded the picture of the glass there with the picture of the boy and the 3 fish and I started of with the boy and drew around him, copied and pasted that then I edited the vintage that you could see around the boy so I edit it using the magic eraser, which took it all away for me once I clicked on it, after to make it look like the boy was actually in the water I multiplied it then lighten the image and I did the same for the other pictures. This is how I got my final image created.
What I was hoping to get done as my final image instead was to have 2 different images blended together into 1 image. I was thinking of getting a glass filled with water to turn into sand (from the egg timer) but I didn't have enough time to get this done and it would of taken a long time.
When other people look at my website I hope that they understand my work and what I am trying to say, and they can easily follow my development processes. If I had more time I would definitely like to try the image that I saw from Mina Sacenac (floating in the air) because it looks fascinating and I wonder how she got it done like that even though overall it looks like an absurd photo.I think I was most successful in the personal project because my presentation stood out more, I also really enjoyed making different pictures but also creating them and I came out with really positive image.
